BUTT UGLY - the book, available soon...

"Hey kids, come over here. I’m gonna tell you a story. It’s the hair-raising, bone-chilling adventure of moi. Yours truly. You see, I wasn’t always such a handsome dog. No siree…

When I was born, everyone screamed, “AAAAUUUEE!! That pup is messed up!! All snaggle-toothed and wrinkly, with three little hairs sticking up from his butt. That pup is butt ugly!”

And that’s what they called me – Butt Ugly. Hard enough being a small, greenish pup in a litter of thirteen walloping tail-waggers. Way worse when you’re saddled with a name like Butt Ugly. You start believing it. At least I did. That’s the power of words and name-calling. Made me feel puny – inside and out..."

Thank you! We are finishing the illustrations now, and we hope to be done in the next few weeks. Then off to the printers. All of us at ZuZu Petals Publishing have made a vow to use only recycled, unbleached paper for all of our books. It is more expensive but only in the very short term. In the long term - anything we can do to protect and preserve our natural resources is money well spent.

I got to read a pre-view copy of this book. This book inspired me and showed me that name-calling can really affect a person's life. But if someone is really nice to them it can really show the true feelings and kindness of someone. I think this book is very good because it inspires me to ingore the bad kids and find real friends who accept me. It also taught me to not call other people names because it affects how they feel about themselves. So I think this is a very important book and should be read to all kids. I can't wait for the next book!

We loved "Filth at the Gardens". The personality and voice of your spunky cockroach left us wanting more! The illustration is perfect--bug with highbrow attitude. More, please! Gloria

Congratulations on your new blog - what a great way to feature some of your endless talents. From one who doesn't have time to read much, this is fabulous. And Claire's endorsement is an inspiration! Marie

My mom is the writer and I am really excited for her to make another Butt Ugly. I loved this one so much. She read it to my class when I was in third grade. And I can't wait for my mom to read it to my 4th grade class this year. There are kids who can learn from it. Just imagine if someone called you a name. It is not nice. This is a lesson that should be taught to all kids, actually everybody. It's a wonderful book. I hope it is a series. I love my mom. I hope she will be a writer forever because all my friends love her stories. Me mostly. Love Hannah

Lynn,

Even though I am 51 years old, I have been reading Children's books all of my life. BUTT UGLY is probably the most heart warming tale I have ever read. From the very first page, you feel so much compassion for this little guy & his indomitable spirit that you just can't stop reading until you know that he'll be alright & yet, how could he not with that face, that tail, that "othodontically challenged grin"?!? He is all heart & you just can't get enough of him!! I have read the book several times & have shared it with more than 20 friends as holiday, birthday, Easter, & "for no special reason!" gifts. Many recipients have thanked me & asked where they can get another copy. Doesn't anyone out there know your neighbor, Oprah? You belong on her show & the book belongs on her Book Club list - not only for young kids - but kids of all ages. Buy the Book & find out why!!! And it's Green! Heck, I am going to read it again!
